PORT OF LE HAVRE: 15.5 % SPURT FOR CONTAINER TRAFFIC IN FIRST 6 MONTHS
October 20, 1997
The results for the first half year show a total traffic in all categories, bunkering excluded, of 30.16 million tonnes, which was almost 3.2 MT more than during the same period in 1996 (+11.9%). At 22.78 MT, bulks rose by 13.6 %, mainly due to imports of crude oil going up by nearly 3 MT to 17.33 MT. General cargo increased by 6.7 % to 7.38 MT, pushed upwards by the 13.4 % rise in the number of containers handled, amounting to 566,660 TEU or 5.39 MT, a gain of 720,000t during the full six months (+15.5 %).
If this rate is maintained, there is every likelihood that 1997 will for the first time in our history take us past the 10 MT mark for containers handled in a single year. The car ferries also turned in good results, with passengers up 3.8 % to 459,000.
The second halfyear has started very promisingly too, with containerised traffic in July notching up two records. At 990,373t the throughput of containerised goods was the best ever, as was the throughput of containers themselves, which for the first time passed 100,000 TEU per month, finishing July at 106,519 TEU.
These excellent figures spring from the steady improvement in productivity. In the case of general cargo they were also made possible by the extensive network of scheduled services available, providing shippers with frequent direct sailings, including 4 weekly round-the-world sailings (6 lines), 14 weekly sailings to the Far East (14 lines), 7 to North America (8 lines), 5 to Central America (4 lines), 4 to South America (7 lines), 9 to North and West Africa (11 lines), 2 to South Africa and the Indian Ocean (5 lines), 3 to the Near and Middle East (4 lines), and 2 to the Baltic (2 lines). The Pacific islands (1 line) are mainly served by transhipment. (fonte: Port Autonome du Havre)
