FROM FAST TRAIN TO HIGH CAPACITY RAIL TRANSPORT
The Ligurian Greens agreed on the third path and the new line Genoa-Milan provided that the transport functionality and the service integration are privileged respect to the maximum speed.
February 19, 1997
Agreement of the Ligurian Greens on the third railway path from Genoa to the North and on the realization of a new line Genoa-Milan which would become a pilot stretch, an example of a conversion from a Fast Train (F.T.) system in a similar 'high capacity' model where the functionality of the transports and the service integration are privileged respect to the maximum speed.
The meeting occurred today between the regional group leader of the Greens, Giovanni Borzone, and the spokeswoman Chiara Malagoli with the Vicepresident and Council Responsible of the Transport, Graziano Mazzarello, confirmed the wide agreement of the Greens on such an approach, recently also announced by the Ministry of Transports, Claudio Burlando, and by the Ministry of the Environment, Edo Ronchi, within the revision of all the projects for the railway system.
The other important items of the meeting the Greens and the Region found an agreement on are concerned with the Genoa network, the goods transport and the local transport. Specifically they are:
THE GENOA NETWORK - The situation of the Genoa network reached a saturation which requires a realization of a third railway path to the North. A new, modern line to properly face the growth of the port traffic and that one implied by the future logistic role of Genoa and the Liguria, to avoid further, heavy environmental damages.
GOODS TRANSPORT - The characteristic of this line consists of the offer of the greater correspondence to the goods transport, cutting out high percentage of traffic of wheel transport.
GENOA HUB - The financial engagements to reorganize the Genoa 'hub' have to be conducted together with those of the line Genoa-Ventimiglia.
Eventually, within the framework of the national debate on the F.T., the Ligurian Greens and the Vicepresident of the Ligurian Region deemed that - according to priorities shown for the completion of the whole work - such a line can be realized according to criteria which do not privilege the maximum speed, making more flexible and more compatible to the environment the route of the line.
