The contract involves the design and construction of a logistics platform for ro-ro cargo to be carried through the completion of the homonymous port existing ro-ro, including the reuse of dredged material for purposes of all or part of environmental restoration (nourishment coastal areas to the north in an essential way).In particular the project, which is part of the Triennial Operational Plan 2011-2013 of the Port of Messina, includes the construction of works at sea and ashore and functional facilities to the construction of a new port infrastructure designed to service the ferry traffic Rubber Strait of Messina and receive a substantial share of ro-ro traffic motorways of the sea that now converges on Messina.
The new dock will be located just south of the existing port of Tremestieri, a locality situated about seven kilometers south of the port of Messina, which has been operational since 2006, is dedicated to the landing and embarkation of heavy vehicles and has been admitted pertaining to the territorial district of the Port of Messina by ministerial decree of 12 October 2006.
