The European Sea Ports Association (ESPO) hopes that the introduced Fund for Innovation within the EU ETS, the system of exchange of quotas of emissions of the European Union, are used to stimulate the demand of new clean naval fuels in order both to widen the market of these fuels and to support the ports in their investments in order to be ready to accept the demand of the market. Moreover the association of European ports asks the States of the EU to confer to the marine field the revenues generated from the application of the EU ETS to this section.
Specifying that European ports are preparing to a growing demand for use of these fuels by the marine sector, and therefore to respond to the greater investments and to the more substantial supplies in the ports of these fuels, in a note ESPO observes that, "so that the harbour agencies are ready for these new fuels, it is necessary that first identify the criteria and the areas in their port for the safe and efficient supply of a new fuel, that they carry out the environment These tasks - it remembers the association - are in line with the fundamental role of the European harbour institutions to guarantee the safety of the harbour operations, in which the European ports are already playing a role of opener and intend to strengthen this function".
