
Last February in the Suez Canal are transited 864 ships. Such a low number of transits had not been recorded for decades, at least since 1990, the year before which
inforMAREdoes not have an uninterrupted series of the monthly naval transit data in the Egyptian channel. If the percentage change of decrease of the traffic marked to February 2025 is less accentuated than the previous months, being pairs to -22.9% on the same month of 2024, this is mainly due to the strong monthly decrease of -42.8% totaled in February last year when the marine traffic in the region of the Red Sea had strongly reduced because of the attacks to the ships in transit carried out by the Houthi rebels starting from the end 2023.
The reduction of transits recorded in February 2025, as well as due to the impact of the crisis still in place in the Red Sea and in the Middle East region, is also effect of the holidays in China for the New Year that this year stopped the productive and commercial activities in the nation for almost all the first half of the month and from a February 2025 with a day less than the corresponding month of 2024.
If last February the 315 transits of tankers in the Suez Canal have recorded a relatively contained bending of the -16.0%, the traffic of the other types of ships - pairs to just 549 units - has instead accused a further marked decrease of -26.3%.
In February last the net tonnage SCNT total of the ships transited is piled to 33,8 million tons (- 26,0%) and the rights of transit paid from the ships have been attested to 13,1 billion Egyptian pounds (259 million dollars), in increase of 24.6% on February 2024.
Non-official data relating to March 2025 indicate for the month a total traffic in the Suez Canal pairs to approximately 1,070 ships, with a decrease of the -4% regarding 1.115 ships transited to March 2024.
