  • ISM deadbeats will find no Asian haven as major ports close net

  • Owners, MUA agree but officers demur
A major breakthrough agreement on a new enterprise-based employment arrangement between Australian shipowners and the MUA is expected to be delivered to the Workplace Relations Minister, Peter Reith for consideration by the end of the month.
The chief executive of the Australian Shipowners Association Lachlan Payne said that the agreement required only "technical modifications" before being sent to Mr Reith, however the Australian Institute of Marine and Power Engineers said its members and those of the Australian Maritime Officers Union had not been consulted since last year, and would not agree to the total package until the conditions of employment had been scrutinised.
  • TNT signs 40m contract
TNT Australia has signed one of the largest logistics contracts in the country - a five year outsourcing deal for Telstra's nationwide warehouse and transport operations.
To service the contract the Dutch-owned TNT announced the formation of a new logistics division TNT Communications logistics to be based in Melbourne with about 135 people dedicated to the contract.
  • P&O loses fight
P&O Ports has been told to close shop at Dampier toady following an unsuccessful attempt to obtain an injunction in the WA supreme Court.
P&O claimed a lease agreement between the Dampier Port Authority and Western Stevedores was not in the public interest and illegally prevented it from trading in a port where it had been operating for over 20 years.
  • WA opposition forces Dampier WS back to negotiating table
Western Australia's Opposition has introduced a disallowance motion into state parliament which will force the Dampier Port Authority and Western Stevedores back to the bargaining table to renegotiate part of their contract.
The motion prevents the government from introducing new regulations for the DPA to enable it to pass its port charging role over to Western Stevedores.
  • Blue Star brand to continue
P&O Nedlloyd's acquisition of Blue Star line will lead to changes in some aspects of services offered by Blue Star in Australia.
All agency arrangements remain in place, however, with P&O Nedlloyd acting for Blue Star Line in Australia and the Blue Star name would continue to be used in all publicity and documentation.
