  • Threat to Tsakos' Daedong deal
TECHNICAL difficulties in addition to problems over refund bank guarantees are threatening Daedong Shipbuilding's breakthrough $120m panamax tanker order from Greek owner Nikolaos Tsakos.
  • German tug is named in London
A GERMAN tug in the Pool of London is a rare event at any time, but for Fairplay 24 and her owners it was a very special occasion.
  • Focus on seafarers exposes training need
THE recently reported mass walk-out at the Philippines' leading merchant marine academy reminded me of an incident many years ago involving a fellow student of mine who initiated legal action against the graduate school for refusing to grant him his master's degree. His argument was that as the school had admitted him to the course, which was both demanding and expensive, he could safely assume that he would pass the exams.
  • FERRY services between Naples and Capri
FERRY services between Naples and the island of Capri have been boosted by the latest delivery from the Pietra Ligure yard of Italian fast ferry specialists Rodriquez Cantieri Navali.Boasting a top speed of 32 knots, the Isola Di Capri has a capacity for 550 passengers and 57 cars, or three trucks in lieu of 17 cars.

  • Patrick ponders legal action over Sydney 'ambiguities'
Patrick is today poised to initiate legal action against the Maritime Union of Australia following an alleged campaign of non co-operation by the union's Sydney branch.
While discussions were still taking place on Friday between senior company and federal union officials, Patrick director, Bill Clayton, said that a course of action has been decided upon.
All that remained to be done was the formalisation of paperwork which could be done as soon as today, Mr Clayton said.
He said that while it was still possible that talks might avert an escalation of the dispute, it was unlikely in view of strong line being adopted by the Sydney branch.
  • Another Golden debut for Dorval
Small tanker specialist Dorval Kaiun has taken delivery of the fourth of five newbuildings due this year in a fleet expansion and replacement program which will see the Japanese-owned company operating 25 vessels by year-end.
Already in 1998 Dorval has introduced the 8670 DWT stainless steel sisters Golden Akane and Golden Yasaka, and last week the 9224 DWT Golden Kaori (pictured) arrived in Melbourne for the first time following her delivery by Higaki Shipbuilding last month. These three and a further ship to be delivered later this year, Golden Yuki, are being added to Dorval's JANZ service between the Far East and Australia/New Zealand, while another newbuilding, Golden Tiffany, has joined the company's US Gulf trade.
  • Five short-listed for key SA contract
Five of Australia's biggest rail freight operators are believed to be short-listed for the lucrative Optima Energy tender for coal haulage and infrastructure management along the 250km rail line between Leigh Creek and Port Augusta in South Australia.
It is understood that government-owned operators FreightCorp, Westrail and National Rail have joined Australia Southern Railroad and Silverton Tramway as short-listed bidders for the $2.7 million coal haulage task for Optima Energy.
A spokeswoman for Optima Energy, the power generation arm of the old ETSA, said the company was in the final stages of assessing the bids and expected to make a decision by November-end.
  • Crude supplies at ports dwindle
As Victorians get back to their hot showers, things are far from 'cooking with gas' for the port and shipping industry.
Western Port is suffering from a lack of vessels as a result of a halt in the manufacture of crude oil, propane and butane since the Esso Long Island Point explosion. Last week BHP declared force majeure on relevant crude oil, natural gas and LPG contracts.
BHP suspended production at its Western Port during the crisis but the Iron Monarch continued to call from Port Kembla, stockpiling steel slab.
Western Port normally handles around 17 ships a month, and the reduction in shipping is now starting to flow onto other port service providers, such as pilotage, towage and mooring services.
