  • Time runs out for ACCC, MUA
Time is rapidly running out for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to drop its proceedings against the Maritime Union of Australia.
According to industry observers unless the action is stopped by the end of this week, the entire deal between Patrick and the MUA might be off.
While there is no comment being made about behind the scenes efforts to resolve the situation, it is understood that certain documents were being considered by the parties yesterday with a view to an out of court settlement.
  • Mid-year changes for PSCs
Conference carriers will adjust port service charges again in January to reflect the decision by the Sydney Ports Corporation to abolishes empty container charge.
The chief executive officer of Liner Shipping Services Ltd, Llew Russell, told DCN yesterday it was unusual for a second adjustment to be made during the year.
However, Mr Russell said the significance of the reduction warranted such a move.
  • Smooth start-up for bar coding
Qantas Freight says the start-up of mandatory bar coding of all export shipments at the airline's freight terminals in Australia earlier this month had gone according to plan, with more than 70 per cent of forwarders now using the bar coding technology.
Qantas has earlier indicated that it would, for a short time, help those who did not have the required equipment in place by the 1 July start-up date. Qantas is offering to provide the labels for freight lodged without a bar code, but the label would have to be applied by the forwarder before the freight is physically accepted.
  • Derailment blocks east-west line
Freight trains on the main east west line were cancelled for 48 hours over the weekend after a Westrail goods train derailed near Kalgoorlie early Saturday morning. The track, which suffered extensive damage in the accident, reopened to traffic yesterday morning. Passenger services have returned to normal but east-west freight services were expected to be delayed for some days to clear the backlog.
