  • CTAL 'hiccup' over
Cargo handling at Container Terminals Australia Ltd at Botany Bay returned to normal yesterday following two days of sporadic disruptions.
The director, commercial, of the NSW Road Transport Association, Terry Dene, said that following complaints about truck queues on Wednesday, the situation appeared to have returned to normal yesterday.
Mr Dene said he was not sure whether this was a one-off "hiccup" or whether it was the prelude to another go-slow at the facility.
Members of the Maritime Union of Australia were allegedly involved in a go-slow following the removal of crane chasers earlier this year.

  • Melbourne may cement role
Rationalisation of the Australian cement industry may favor the port of Melbourne, if plans now under consideration reach fruition.
The long-expected shake-out in the industry was heralded at the annual general meeting of Adeaide Brighton Limited this week, when chairman Malcolm Kinnaird described "a time of major uncertainty for our industry and our company".
He said that as early as last August the company started "serious discussions" with other parties in the cement industry aimed at achieving a rationalisation, and that since then long and arduous negotiations had been under way with several parties.
Mr Kinnaird said he regretted that he was unable to elaborate while sensitive, protracted and delicate discussions were proceeding.
  • TWU calls off Ansett action
The Transport Workers' Union yesterday [26/11] called off today's planned industrial action at Ansett Australia over the airline's proposal to sell its door-to-door retail freight business and inflight catering operations.
An union spokesman said protected industrial action was initiated earlier this week for stopwork meetings across Australia today, but last minute talks yesterday morning averted any industrial action.
However, he said the TWU had not yet reached a final settlement and that there would be meetings of union members at Ansett across Australia today to discuss the issue further, with skeleton crews operating. About 1000 TWU members are affected by Ansett's sale plans.
