  • Melbourne plans for freight treble
Melbourne airport management last week released a 20-year blueprint for development, promising massive boosts in traffic.
As well as plans to develop a third runway at Tullamarine, the draft master plan predicts that the amount of freight handled could more than triple, and passenger movements jump by 23.1 million by 2018-19.
  • Botany Bay battle in court
The Federal Court is today expected to start hearing the Maritime Union of Australia’s application which could determine the future of the strike at Patrick’s Botany Bay terminal.
The union will attempt to prove that its members should have been paid for work performed at the terminal, contrary to advice Patrick received from the Minister for Workplace Relations Peter Reith.
  • Reith ‘on ego trip’
Australian Peak Shippers Association executive director Frank Beaufort lashed out at the Minister the Workplace Relations Peter Reith on Friday, accusing him of being on an "ego trip".
Mr Beaufort said that neither Mr Reith nor Patrick chairman Chris Corrigan had considered the plight of Sydney exporters and as far as Mr Reith was concerned the current strategy on the waterfront had more symbolic than real economic significance.
  • New bulk facility for Melbourne
The port of Melbourne is to see more farmers on its wharves with the development of a bulk commodity import/export facility by Queensland’s Grainco limited.
The facility will be a staged development, with a capital investment of over $40 million occupying an eight hectare site, the location of which the company will not yet disclose.
  • P&O Australia has a big year
P&O Australia had a successful 1997 with strong results from international ports, cold storage logistics and maritime services contributing $A179.74 million - up 30 per cent from 1996 - to the parent company’s results.
P&O Chairman Lord Sterling said with reference to Australia that total facilities management and catering and cleaning services also had a good year.
