He said that in the end the decision not to stand was taken in the best interests of the union.
  • True North shows her true colors in the west
Henderson shipbuilder, Image Marine debuted its latest vessel this week -- a $5.5 million 34.5-metre charter boat.

She has a cruising speed of 21 knots, is fitted with a helicopter pad, state-of-the art dive equipment, climate controlled cabins, lounge, dining and entertainment areas and a gift shop.
  • RAC under pressure to drop prices
Rail Access Corporation has come under strong pressure to slash track access rates in the Hunter Valley after a government tribunal recommended it drop its price for coal rail transport by an average 40 cents a tonne for the central Hunter Valley mines.
The proposed cost savings were detailed in a draft report released this week by the NSW Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal, which has been investigating the state's rail access regime for some time.
  • Rail unions blast QR over staff hiring practices
Queensland Rail has came under fire for its staff hiring practices, with rail unions yesterday notifying QR management of the potential for a dispute over the rail operator's alleged use of fixed-term labor hire and contracting out of work.
The Australian Rail Tram & Bus Industry Union (Queensland branch) said yesterday it had become increasingly concerned about the use of what is known as "precarious" or "non-standard employment" in QR.
  • Road costs soaring in WA
The cost of road construction in Western Australia has skyrocketed under the Court government's gradual privatisation of road building, according to the state Opposition.
Opposition spokesperson for Transport Alannah MacTiernan said the government had failed to deliver the big savings it had promised from the contracting out of all road construction.
