The only difference was that the stevedore was Strang and not Patrick, which had been the subject of several bitter disputes at the site in the past.
P&OP favoured in Bunbury The Bunbury Port Authority has awarded P&O Ports preferred tenderer status for the outsourcing of its stevedoring, mooring, and pilotage services. BPA general manager Dom Figliomeni said he was confident the port would be able to award a licence to P&OP to provide these services by 1 July. He said P&OP was one of three companies to submit conforming tenders to the port. The other two companies were Stirling Harbour Services and Toll. He said 11 companies, including national and local firms, had been present at the compulsory briefing at the outset of the tender process.

Holyman losses blow out One-time high-flying transport and logistics group Holyman Limited has posted a $44.8 million loss after tax and abnormal items for the year to 31 December 1998. That bottom line result compares to the $29.8 million loss recorded in 1997. The figures also show, for the first time, the substantial amounts it cost Holyman to extract itself from its overseas ferry businesses in order to stem losses and reduce debt.
Adsteam awaits Austal's oceanfast buyout Adsteam Marine is keenly awaiting Austal's proposed acquisition of the troubled Oceanfast business in the hope that work on Adsteam's major tug building programme may be resumed. Work was suspended last week on the $52 million tug contract because delivery of engines from Japan was delayed. The tug contract is for seven new generation tugs for Adsteam Marine and Howard Smith, one each for sole ownership and five for joint operation.
Extra funds speed SA road audit The South Australian government has announced that a road safety audit of all the state's arterial roads and national highways has been given extra funds to speed up completion of the project. State Minister for Transport and Urban Planning Diana Laidlaw said the audit would receive an additional $880,000 over the next two years to accelerate and complete Transport SA's audit work of 11,000km of roads across the state. Ms Laidlaw said the funding, in support of an Environment, Resources and Development Committee (ERD) report on the Road Safety Strategy, would ensure that the state led the country in developing a complete road audit program.

Shipbreakers lift the gloom ASIA S SHIPBREAKERS are bringing a ray of hope to the battered dry cargo market. A surge of buying led by India has seen more than 100 bulkers and dry cargo ships sold for scrap in the first few weeks of the year. India s buying spree has been fuelled by fears of changes in the government s budget but brokers believe the country is now capable of soaking up an avalanche of tonnage.
