    Romanian shippers said 100,000 tons of cargo for Western destinations was blocked in local ports after NATO bombing raids wrecked three bridges on the Danube in northern Yugoslavia
  • World Fuel Services Mulls Expansion
    World Fuel Services Corp. is considering further acquistions following an $8.5 million deal to buy Bunkerfuels Group. Miami-based World Fuel Services bought Bunkerfuels because the fuel broker's business fitted neatly with the group's existing marine activities.
  • Philadelphia Freedom?
    While the impact of the sale of Kvaerner's shipbuilding business is unclear, it appears the engineering and construction beheamouth will not abandon its new Philadelphia operation, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Kvaerner, which announced plans to sell or close its 13 shipyards around the world due to low profits, is seeking a buyer for the Philadelphia yard. If a buyer is not found, "then Kvaerner must continue," said Harald Rafdal, CEO of Kvaerner Philadelphia Inc., sending a signal that the shipping giant would not abandon the Philadelphia operation.
  • New CEO For Zim Israel
    Ofer Brothers plans to name Udi Angel as chairman of Zim Israel Navigation Co, replacing Yoseph Rosen who had held the position temporarily. Angel is general manager of the Ofer Brothers shipping company. The Ofers Brothers group formally took control of Zim's parent company, the Israel Corp., on Wednesday. Rosen is Israel Corp's managing director. Angel's appointment will be voted on at the next meeting.
  • Osprey LNG Carrier Chartered
    Osprey Maritime Ltd. said its liquid natural gas carrier (LNG) Khannur has been chartered until December 1999 by International Gas Transportation Co. (IGTC). It said in a statement IGTC chartered the 125,000 cu. m. carrier from May on behalf of sellers in the North West Shelf Project in Australia. Osprey did not provide details on the price of the contract.
  • New York Could Lose Sea-Land, Maersk
    Sea-Land Service Inc. and Maersk Inc. will spend the next several weeks reviewing proposals from three ports competiting for their business. The companies received the final bid packages from Baltimore, New York/New Jersey and Nova Scotia, Canada.
  • IACS To List "Class Jumpers"
    Vessels leaving members' classification for shipping standards will from now be identified on the International Association of Classification Societies' (IACS) web site. Updated monthly, the list was expected to name around 2,000 vessels a year, IACS said.
  • Atlantic Sector Buoys Baltic Indices
    Firm conditions for Panamaxes and Handies in the Atlantic sector lifted all the Baltic indices last Thursday. The Baltic Freight Index (BFI) rose nine points to 873, while the Baltic Panamax Index and the Baltic Handy Index gained 14 points to 885 and 754 respectively. In the grain markets, Marc Rich was reported to have fixed a 1978-built vessel 65,000 dwt U.S. Gulf/Alexandria at $6,000 plus $100,000 ballast bonus, and Glencore was said to have fixed the 1983-built Leader A.II 64,861 dwt U.S. Gulf/Egypt at around the same levels. Finagrain fixed the 1998-built Samjohn Amity 74,000 dwt delivery Dunkirk early May for an east coast South American round voyage at $7,500 daily on subjects. On the minerals markets, Capers were busier but rates remained flat. Bocimar fixed Monalisa for 140,000 tons coal Bolivar/Sines at $3/3.10, and Bulk Trading fixed Amber for 50,000 tons coal Maracaibo/Mobile prompt at $4.
  • Weakness Expected In Aframax Markets
    Norway's Bona Shipholding expects the Aframax tanker market to weaken further during 1999. Freight rates for its Aframax tankers fell about 16 percent in the first quarter of 1999 to $15,773 per day on a time charter basis largely due to U.S refinery maintenance during February.
