East-West line re-opens Trans-continental rail freight services were scheduled to resume last night after Westrail completed repairs to an 800-metre damaged section of track at Bonnievale, 600km east of Perth. The track, which carries all rail traffic travelling into and out of Western Australia, was damaged after the derailment of a National Rail freight train on Sunday night. Eight wagons carrying steel were derailed during the accident, which resulted in a 48-hour delay for 16 freight services operated by Westrail, National Rail, Toll Rail and Specialised Container Transport.
SPC to lose two senior staff by month-end Two senior Sydney Ports Corporation executives will leave at the end of January to take up private sector positions, SPC chief executive officer Greg Martin announced yesterday. Don Ross, who has been general manager-commercial for the past two years, has resigned to take up a position as managing director of Metal Craft, a company which specialises in the manufacture of environmental control equipment. Business development manager Andrew Gibson has accepted a position as manager projects and business development with P&O Ports' bulk and general stevedoring division after eight years with the SPC.
AMSA dismisses calls for PSC grades True to its long-maintained position on the issue, AMSA yesterday again dismissed international shipowners' calls for modifications to Port State Control inspection authorities' definitions of what consitutes a 'ship detention'. An AMSA spokesman categorically rejected a proposal by Norwegian Shipowners Association director Terje C. Gloersen that 'good' ship operators should not have to wear the stigma associated with ship detentions for minor infringements of international safety standards.
