A source of pride and pain IT'S been a source of pride for its European builders and of headaches for accountants. Sometimes called Europe's answer to America's space programme, the Concorde SST, one of which crashed last week outside Paris, has been unprofitable for the French-British consortium that built it and, until recently, for the two airlines that flew it. Aviation experts say it was doomed from the start, economically, by a range that's too short, by too few seats and by a fuel-wasting 1960s design never worth updating because so few Concordes are flying -- 13 before Tuesday's crash. Range, according to Jane's All the World's Aircraft, is 6,545km, just more than half the range of the Boeing 747-400.
