It's labor Day and the 10-month unfair labor practice strike by the Teamsters union against Overnite Transportation Co. can be viewed as a microcosm of labor relations in this country at this time. The Richmond, Va.-based carrier, the nation's sixth-largest stand-alone LTL carrier and biggest nonunion LTL carrier, says it has endured the worst of the labor strife in the early days of the strike and it now is a manageable distraction. The company recently posted its best earnings for any 90-day period in six years. The Teamsters strongly dispute that, saying Overnite is missing out on even greater profitability because competitors both union and nonunion are reaping rewards from what arguably is the best LTL freight environment in 10 years.
The exact date for when Congress gets out of Washington to get back home for the campaign run is fungible, but there are hard and fast decisions to be made concerning transportation between now and adjournment. There are surely 18-hour workdays between now and when lawmakers end the 106th Congress in early October. Rail lobbyists are wary of a stealth measure that might loosen the freeze on longer and heavier trucks. Trucking lobbyists want to insert a measure in the appropriations bill prohibiting the Department of Transportation from making any changes in truck driver hours-of-service regulations. Spending for airport construction, highways and Amtrak are not controversial but there still are potential speed bumps ahead. In short, this is the period when Washington transport lobbyists earn their paychecks.
Germany-based Microlog Logistics AG is a new-breed third party. Microlog, along with D-Logistics and Thiel Logistiks, are seen as 3PLs that have more to do with information technology than transportation. It seems to be working Microlog's June 28 initial public offering was over-subscribed 27 times and the stock has nearly tripled to more than $100 a share. It jumped more than $20 in one two-day period when Microlog announced it had posted $184,000 profit on $16 million revenue.

Is a recession lurking just around the corner? Truck manufacturing numbers often are viewed as a leading economic indicator and the two leading Class 8 manufacturers are sending out recessionary signals. Freightliner, with a 30.2 percent Class 8 market share, and Navistar International, with a 16.9 percent share, both are laying off workers in the wake of collapsing Class 8 orders. Whether this is a harbinger of a larger economic downturn is debatable, but for the 5,000 or so workers affected by the layoff, the recession has arrived early. Meanwhile, fast -growing American Freightways, Harrison, Ark., continues to expand, placing a late-year $19 million order that will boost its capital expenditure for the year to $100 million.
United Parcel Service and FedEx compete on many levels and sporting-events sponsorship is one of them. The Summer Olympic Games in Sydney are just two weeks away and UPS is in high gear, promoting its sponsorship of the games, its employee athletes and its designation as the official small package handler in Sydney. UPS is on the fence about whether to continue the highest level of sponsorship for the next Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002. FedEx, meanwhile, is gearing up for the start of football season where this year it won the official sponsorship claim for the National Football League from UPS, which has held it, or paid for it, since 1993.
About $90 million in federal funding for dredging the Port of Baltimore is in jeopardy because of environmental concerns. Although Congress approved the project four years ago, environmentalists have raised howls over the effects of the dredging on the Chesapeake Bay. The Baltimore project would save shipping lines between $20,000 and $40,00 for a one-way trip to or from the port.
Gateway Telecom Canada, a leading telecommunications company, reached agreement with Canadian Pacific Railroad to bury 3,000 miles of fiber optic cable along the railroad's right of way. The deal is the largest in what has become a popular and cost-free way to boost railroads' stagnant top-line revenue growth. But how successful railroads are in this arena depends on how involved the notoriously risk-averse railroads want to become with a new-economy industry that thrives on innovation.
