Les scénatios mis en place sur base de l’expérience de précédentes actions de protestation dans les ports français ont bien fonctionné. Les ports côtiers flamands ont plié suite à cette surcharge, mais n’ont pas rompu. France: le blocage des ports s’était étendu au trafic commercial
    S’agissant du fonctionnement des ports français, les mouvements de protestation contre le niveau actuel du prix des carburants viennent de prendre une dimension nouvelle. Jusqu lundi 28 août, le blocage des activités portuaires était organisé afin de ne pénaliser, pour l’essentiel, que les plaisanciers. Le franchissement d’une nouvelle étape avec extension des blocages au trafic commercial a été amorcée le mardi 29 août et s’est amplifié le mercredi 30. Dans la nuit de mercredi à jeudi, le port du Havre a aussi été bloqué. Le risque est maintenant de voir le mouvement se durcir et s’étendre, directement ou indirectement, au transport routier.     Le groupe luxembourgeois de logistique Thiel Logistik, qui est coté en bourse de Francfort depuis mars dernier, profite de l’apport financier ainsi généré pour progresser à grands pas. Ces dernières semaines, plusieurs rachats ont été effectués dans le secteur de la logistique aux services de santé, ainsi que dans le transport conventionnel en Suisse et en Autriche. Ainsi, il a acheté BTL en février, Quehenberger en juin et pris il y a quelques jours la majorité de Delacher+co. Aujourd’hui, son président, Günter Thiel, annonce qu’il veut intensifier sa présence dans l’expédition maritime et aérienne, en se focalisant sur les services aux entreprises de commerce électronique.

  • It's labor Day and the 10-month unfair labor practice strike by the Teamsters union against Overnite Transportation Co. can be viewed as a microcosm of labor relations in this country at this time. The Richmond, Va.-based carrier, the nation's sixth-largest stand-alone LTL carrier and biggest nonunion LTL carrier, says it has endured the worst of the labor strife in the early days of the strike and it now is a manageable distraction. The company recently posted its best earnings for any 90-day period in six years. The Teamsters strongly dispute that, saying Overnite is missing out on even greater profitability because competitors – both union and nonunion – are reaping rewards from what arguably is the best LTL freight environment in 10 years.
  • The exact date for when Congress gets out of Washington to get back home for the campaign run is fungible, but there are hard and fast decisions to be made concerning transportation between now and adjournment. There are surely 18-hour workdays between now and when lawmakers end the 106th Congress in early October. Rail lobbyists are wary of a stealth measure that might loosen the freeze on longer and heavier trucks. Trucking lobbyists want to insert a measure in the appropriations bill prohibiting the Department of Transportation from making any changes in truck driver hours-of-service regulations. Spending for airport construction, highways and Amtrak are not controversial but there still are potential speed bumps ahead. In short, this is the period when Washington transport lobbyists earn their paychecks.
  • Germany-based Microlog Logistics AG is a new-breed third party. Microlog, along with D-Logistics and Thiel Logistiks, are seen as 3PLs that have more to do with information technology than transportation. Almost all of Microlog's top executives come from industrial and information technology backgrounds. Supply-chain management is in the hands of former production, procurement and IT executives. It seems to be working – Microlog's June 28 initial public offering was over-subscribed 27 times and the stock has nearly tripled to more than $100 a share. It jumped more than $20 in one two-day period when Microlog announced it had posted $184,000 profit on $16 million revenue.
  • There's something hot in the application kitchen. AMR Research's new report, "Value Is the Name of the Game: The Top 12 Hot New Application Markets," details the latest cutting-edge software for companies. Some on the list: portfolio optimization, marketing optimization, dynamic pricing and profit optimization. All of these new applications offer additional functionality to supply-chain software, said Rod Johnson, service director, e-business application practice at AMR Research and writer of the report.
  • Is a recession lurking just around the corner? Truck manufacturing numbers often are viewed as a leading economic indicator and the two leading Class 8 manufacturers are sending out recessionary signals. Freightliner, with a 30.2 percent Class 8 market share, and Navistar International, with a 16.9 percent share, both are laying off workers in the wake of collapsing Class 8 orders. Whether this is a harbinger of a larger economic downturn is debatable, but for the 5,000 or so workers affected by the layoff, the recession has arrived early. Meanwhile, fast -growing American Freightways, Harrison, Ark., continues to expand, placing a late-year $19 million order that will boost its capital expenditure for the year to $100 million.
  • United Parcel Service and FedEx compete on many levels and sporting-events sponsorship is one of them. The Summer Olympic Games in Sydney are just two weeks away and UPS is in high gear, promoting its sponsorship of the games, its employee athletes and its designation as the official small package handler in Sydney. UPS is on the fence about whether to continue the highest level of sponsorship for the next Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002. FedEx, meanwhile, is gearing up for the start of football season where this year it won the official sponsorship claim for the National Football League from UPS, which has held it, or paid for it, since 1993.
  • About $90 million in federal funding for dredging the Port of Baltimore is in jeopardy because of environmental concerns. Although Congress approved the project four years ago, environmentalists have raised howls over the effects of the dredging on the Chesapeake Bay. The Baltimore project would save shipping lines between $20,000 and $40,00 for a one-way trip to or from the port.
  • Gateway Telecom Canada, a leading telecommunications company, reached agreement with Canadian Pacific Railroad to bury 3,000 miles of fiber optic cable along the railroad's right of way. The deal is the largest in what has become a popular and cost-free way to boost railroads' stagnant top-line revenue growth. But how successful railroads are in this arena depends on how involved the notoriously risk-averse railroads want to become with a new-economy industry that thrives on innovation.
