    Le fait d'avoir choisi Anvers, plus précisément le terminal de la Noord Natie sur l'Escaut, pour y procéder au baptême du dernier né de sa flotte, le PC "P&O Nedlloyd Mercator" de 5.456 TEU (54.432 t.dw), est considéré comme le témoignage de l'intérêt que porte cet armement anglo-néerlandais à ce port. Au cours d'un entretien que nous eûmes avec Ruitger van Slobbe, directeur chargé de la flotte et des terminaux, entretien qui suivait une conférence de presse donnée à bord, ce dernier nous a confirmé que la participation de l'armement avec P&O Ports et le port de Duisbourg à la soumission en vue d'obtenir la concession du troisième terminal à containers à marée à réaliser dans la future darse à marée au sud de Doel, n'avait pas servi de moyen de pression pour obtenir un terminal dédié avec ECT comme partenaire à la Maasvlakte.

    Le bureau d'études KPMG a réalisé, pour le compte de l'Union internationale des transports routiers (IRU), une étude sur l'importance du transport routier pour la compétitivité des entreprises européennes. Il en ressort que les obstacles entravant celui-ci se traduisent par des coûts qui demeurent démesurément élevés en Europe, ce qui contraste avec les progrès accomplis grâce à la combinaison de la logistique et du transport routier, progrès qui profitent à la croissance et devraient stimuler l'économie. Près de la moitié (44%) des entreprises européennes déplorent que ces obstacles subsistent et entament la compétitivité européenne.

    Le groupe Panalpina a réalisé un bénéfice net de 73,3 mio. de CHF (+16,3%) et un bénéfice d'exploitation de 103,6 mio. de CHF (+7,6%) en 1999. "Si Panalpina a réussi à consolider sa position de leader dans les services aériens et maritimes, le groupe a la ferme intention de poursuivre son développement en tant que prestataire de services logistiques intégrés", a déclaré Gerhard Fischer, le président du comité de direction de Panalpina lors d'une conférence de presse à Zürich. L'année dernière et cette année, le groupe logistique suisse a entrepris des démarches spécifiques à cet effet. Le lancement du nouveau produit all.in, la reprise d'Avalog et le développement de nouveaux services financiers doivent en effet permettre à l'entreprise de se profiler en tant que fourth party logistic provider avec le fret aérien et maritime comme activités de base.
