    L’Entreprise portuaire de Gand, la GAB, s’est déjà entièrement repliée sur ses activités de base en tant qu’autorité exerçant un rôle de contrôle et de facilitation, n’intervient pas dans le fonctionnement du marché et ne doit donc pas réellement s’inquiéter de l’application de la directive européenne sur la libéralisation des services portuaires, actuellement en discussion. Le décret portuaire flamand et sa clé de répartition pour le financement de nouvelles infrastructures portuaires suscitent davantage d’inquiétude: Gand pourra, il est vrai, prétendre à une plus grande part du gâteau des subsides, mais devra - lorsque le régime transitoire actuel aura disparu - supporter dans une mesure beaucoup plus large le poids des investissements en question. En ce qui concerne la vision à long terme sur l’Escaut, Gand espère surtout qu’elle se traduira par la création d’un organisme néerlando-flamand pour une gestion commune de la voie navigable en matière d’accessibilité, de gestion nautique et de sécurité. Et le troisième port maritime flamand entend pouvoir profiter dans une mesure comparable aux autres ports du nouvel approfondissement de l’Escaut.
