Pour l’instant l’administration Bush, tout en manifestant une sérieuse inquiétude, fait preuve de prudence et de réserve. L’affaire est particulièrement délicate, car il ne faut pas perdre de vue que le déroulement de ce conflit peut avoir des répercussions considérables sur les futures négociations qui devront intervenir sur la côte est en 2004.
