    L’objectif de la Container Security Initiative (CSI) est de sécuriser davantage les flux de containers en direction des Etats-Unis. Aux yeux de l’administration américaine, cela implique également des contrôles plus sévères dans les pays d’où proviennent les flux de cargaisons. Selon nos collègues de la presse spécialisée néerlandaise, une équipe de la douane américaine va coopérer avec la douane néerlandaise dans le cadre d’un projet pilote à Rotterdam. Anvers, qui est un important port de chargement vers les Etats-Unis avec un trafic de 8,6 mio. de tonnes en 2001 (dont 2,8 mio. de tonnes containérisées), est également disposé à coopérer aux initiatives américaines. Le Customs Attaché de l’ambassade américaine à Paris est attendu dans le port anversois en mai prochain, tandis que la douane belge sera représentée à la réunion de l’OMI organisée autour de ce thème à Londres.

Dans ce contexte, le groupe maritime chilien Compañia Sudamericana de Vapores (CSAV), fondé en 1872, est le seul opérateur d’Amérique latine qui soit parvenu à s’inscrire dans le club des méga-carriers Est-Ouest et Nord Sud. Il a obtenu ce statut grâce à une politique judicieuse de diversification de ses activités, qui lui a assuré une assise financière solide et les moyens de poursuivre les expansions assez spectaculaires auxquelles il a procédé ces dernières année sous la direction de son président Ricardo Claro Valdés.
