More than 150 Norwegian-controlled ships fly the Liberian flag, even though the Norwegian Shipowners' Association has urged members to drop it. They fear that fees paid to the Liberian ships' registry has financed the country's brutal civil war and the oppressive regime of Charles Taylor.
