Supreme Court issues safety norms for ship-breakers

The Supreme Court has formulated fresh guidelines for the ship-breaking industry which is intended to tighten safety norms. This follows the recent controversy over the Norwegian tanker Hesperus turning up at Alang, one of the leading ship demolition yards in the world.

Greenpeace protested the beaching of the vessel, which is believed to have carried banned objects.

The guidelines include that the ship be properly decontaminated by the shipowner prior to the breaking ......
