KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21: Al-Qaeda operatives had plans to launch a terrorist attack against an American ship in Malaysian or Indonesian ports earlier this year, according to US defence analysts.
They believed that al-Qaeda had around 15 vessels at its disposal to mount "suicide ramming attacks" as well as to transport men and materials.
Mark J. Valencia, a Senior Fellow in the Research Programme of the East West Centre in Honolulu, told the
New Straits Times that the US perceived that its defence should be pre-emptive to prevent terrorist attacks such as that on the USS Cole and the French tanker Limburg in Yemeni waters
