Containership owners such as the Tung family-controlled Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), will spend more than US$22 billion (HK$171.6 billion) on new boxships this year, five times the amount spent last year.
OOCL alone has placed orders worth US$320 million this year, after contracting South Korean shipyard Samsung Heavy Industries to build four massive 8,063 TEUs containerships. Orders for the latest two have only been placed in the past few days
