KOLKATA: The city port may end up as a seasonal port if predictions of the Ganga shifting its course come true. Given the extensive erosion witnessed in the Malda district this year, geologists and river experts have warned that the Ganga would bypass the Farakka barrage to meet the Mahananda and flow into Bangladesh.
"If the river bypassed the barrage, it would be disastrous as the Kolkata port would turn into a seasonal one. While the barrage makes it possible for the riverine port to receive 40,000 cusec water for vessels to navigate the channel, drying up will lead to its total dependence on rains and tidal water," Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) sources said
