Today, the new American Consul General in Naples, Donald J. Moore, visited the port of Gioia Tauro in a series of institutional meetings that the U.S. diplomat is making these days in Calabria. Moore was accompanied by some of the same consulate officials including Manuel Comnenus and Joshua Lawrence.
In the early afternoon, the consul, acting head of the office CSI (U.S. Customs), visited the offices of the customs authority and subsequently, with the objective to learn about the institutions that govern the territory and therefore the port, he met the leaders of the Port Authority. Upon his arrival was welcomed by the port's general secretary Salvatore Silvestri, the executive officer Louis Xavier Spatafora and Wanderer.
Illustrating the console port on the activities of the Secretary-General stressed that Silvestri Gioia Tauro is "an important port for the economic development of Calabria, as it produces 50% of the GDP of the private region, thus ensuring employment to 3,000 people." "The port of Gioia Tauro - Moore agreed - is an economic reality of fundamental importance for the national economy and, consequently, international. Within the framework of intergovernmental relations, aimed at transport safety, there is excellent cooperation between our authorities. These strategic relationships, treated with the utmost care and with great collaborative spirit by my government. To be responsible for this area - said the American Consul - it will be my job to work in harmony with the local authorities in order to strengthen safety standards in place, with the aim of improving the highest standards. At the same time, in a spirit of active collaboration and as part of my responsibilities on behalf of my Government, I wish to contribute to the economic development of the whole area. "
