In the field of marine insurance continues to be an excess underwriting capacity and this does not reduce a now chronic, highly competitive prices. This was underlined by Bartholomew Barberis, Chairman of the Committee of the Maritime Insurance Companies of Genoa, during the 151st annual meeting of the Committee. Barberis, who is the Deputy Director General of SIAT Spa, said that premiums have not had an appreciable effect even the disasters that have hit the year 2010.
"The industry bodies - said the Chairman of the Committee in its report - was affected by conflicting signals presented by the owner, whose freight rates have taken a different and fluctuating. As a whole did not present the same elements of great deviation from the past and it is confirmed stable. However, there has been some downward pressure, especially for large fleets and with favorable results over the years. For the industry bodies, confirming the foregoing, it is noted the presence of a high capacity levels of taxation underwriting conditioning. Goods sector for the insurers of the Italian market, albeit increasingly compete with foreign operators, have faced the same difficulties that have characterized the recent past as a depressed trade and increased competition. "
Referring to official data published by ANIA (National Association of Insurance Companies), "we find - said Barberis - that with regard to the bodies of marine vehicles, the Italian direct business premiums have declined compared to 2009 of 3 , 60% to 352,536 euros in the first two companies that, alone, have signed up about 63% of the premiums, if you look at the groups, the first two awards totaled more than 87%. In the cargo sector, the reduction for 2009 was 4.4% while the two companies have signed up around 31%. Clearly, the significant lower concentration compared to the freight sector bodies.Recall that in 2010, the bodies there was an increase of 6.8% over 2009 while the goods of 17.60% reduction. As for the international market, the latest data available refer to the year 2009 and see Italy, with $ 406,329 in fifth place (after France suffered 431,705) in the standings. The same fifth place with $ 1,099,640 is obtained by considering the totality of transport awards (Body + Goods + Liability + Offshore) ".
