30th june has concluded "Sustainable Cruise", the co-financed European plan from the EU commission through LIFE+ that is started in september 2011 with the objective to experiment, within a "ship pilot", Costa Pacifica, models of management and innovative technologies that answered to the objectives established from the European directive on the refusals. It has been be a matter of a plan to experimental character, of the value of 2,7 million euros and co-financed from the EU to 50%, through which the principle is applied for the first time to the field of the cruises second which the refusals are a resource and like such they go on board managed also.

Costa Crociere, front man and ideatrice of the plan that has proposed it to the European Union with Ce.Si.S.P. (Interuniversitario Center for the Development of the Sustainability of Prodotti) and to the Italian companies VOMM, Trade Content, Innovation Design, Rina Services and MedCruise, association that reunites the crocieristici ports of the Mediterranean, has introduced today the results reached in these three years of job on the three main rows of refusals experimentation object - biodegradable packings, paper and refusals - and on the front of the involvement of the harbour structures, that they have contributed to in concrete terms reduce the environmental impact of the produced refusals on board.

In the within of the plan on board of Costa Pacifica is installed a turboessicatore dedicated to the treatment of the biodegradable refusals, a system of heat treatment in two phases that the volume of the refusal reduces without to alter the protein and nourishing characteristics of the food, returning it so a potential one "producing" ended that, in a future, it could be resold and/or red-use. Costa Crociere has explained that the analysis of the liquids deriving from this process has shown, moreover, as the oils and the fat people deriving from the treatment of the biodegradable refusals (approximately 1,9% of the total) potentially constitutes a rich material of riutilizzabile quality like biocarburante.

Sul forehead of the reduction of the packings the main results are obtained thanks to the substitution of the bottles in mineral water glass (that they represented on board approximately 50% of the present glass) with bottles in recyclable plastic PET. They have been beyond the 11.900 for every cruise bottles of glass replaced with bottles in recyclable plastic PET for a total of 7.300 kg of glass saved (medium difference 2011/2014). In terms of contribution to the greenhouse effect - it has found the crocieristica company - to pass highly from the glass, producing with a process energivoro, to plastic PET affords a reduction of the emissions of 50% of the life-cycle of the bottles, pairs to approximately 120 gr of co2 equivalent in less to the day for every passenger and 342 kg of co2 equivalent for every day of cruise. Equally sustainable it has been the substitution of the jars of yoghurt in plastic with brik in tetrapak from a liter: in this case they have been the 6,500 jars of yoghurt in for cruise for 33 kg totals of plastic less saved (medium difference 2011/2014).

For the reduction of the paper refusals, the passengers involved actively in the activities of environmental education have been beyond 1.400 on the aware use of the paper (creative laboratories and sustainable quiz), to which they join more than 18.000 dependent Coast that are reached by a series of elaborated messages of sensitization in the within of the plan.

Moreover, between the activities of reduction of the refusals to the source, presents are digitized the contained information in the various paper materials on board, like for example the action pilot on Costa Pacifica of reduction of 50% of the dimension of the newsletter "Today", one of more diffuse the paper instruments of information on board.

the crocieristica company has announced that after the experimentation on Costa Pacifica these actions are extended to all the ships of the Costa Crociere fleet.

Costa Crociere has emphasized that thanks to the plan it has been possible to test also in concrete the application of the national and European norm on the topic refusals being discovered improvement areas that is fundamental to implement in order to increase the sustainability of the field: in particular - it has specified the company - relative the national norm to the disembarked refusals to earth does not allow today to classify the material produced from the turboessicatore like "secondary raw materials" even if, for its qualities, it is possible to assume some I use it for successive workings. At last in the within of the plan Sustainable Cruise, to the aim to on board integrate the activities experienced with the services of management and treatment of the present refusals near the harbour structures, 52 ports of the Mediterranean is involved in an activity of census of the structures dedicated to the management of the refusals realized through the creation of a dedicated platform web, that it will be dawned twice a year. Some between the involved ports will take to part to a distance pilot in order to supply advance services of management of the refusals to a Costa Crociere ship along its route in the course of the next crocieristica season.
