Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA), the initiative cofounded by the commercial enterprises Amazon, Patagonia and Tchibo to which have joined other companies that sell their products on all the world markets, has started its second race to collect offers for the marine transport of the goods of the associated companies realized using clean synthetic naval fuels. The objective is to reach a volume of transport pairs to 86 billion tons-mill nautical realized with ships that use e-fuel. ZEMBA has specified that it is a volume of transport pairs to 1,5 million container from 20 feet and that such mode of marine transport will allow to its more than 40 associate companies to reduce of approximately 500 thousand tons the emissions of greenhouse gases produced from their shipments by sea.
ZEMBA expects offers from a containerized marine carrier or from a consortium of companies that operate this type of services that preview the transport by sea of goods on ships fed with e-fuel for the duration of 3-5 years from 2027. The proposals will have to show a reduction of at least 90% of the total emissions of greenhouse gases of the primary system of propulsion of the ships regarding the use of high emissions fuels. ZEMBA plans to complete the race by announcing the result by the end of this year. The first race, completed in April 2024, has been awarded to the German containerized navigation company Hapag-Lloyd that is collaborating with the companies associated with ZEMBA to reduce of at least 82 thousand tons of CO2 equivalent the emissions produced from their marine transports realized in 2025 and 2026.
