The Commission for the Expansion of Barcelona-El Airport
Prat was set up a year ago by the Foment del Treball Nacional, the
federation representing companies in Catalonia, after one year
has today put forward 11 technical proposals to expand the
Spanish airport. The Chairman of Foment del Treball,
Josep Sánchez Llibre, pointed out that Catalonia cannot
afford to miss 'this opportunity' to
upgrading the airport which would contribute to its economic development,
while the Chairman of the Commission, Lluís Moreno,
In presenting the proposals, he assured that all eleven were
in coordination with the Port of Barcelona: 'We -
Moreno stressed - we want Catalonia to have the best
port and the best possible airport."
A coordination with the port that seems to be contradicted by
a letter sent on Friday by the Chairman of the Authority
Port of Barcelona, Lluís Salvadó Tenesa, at the
Chairman of Foment del Treball, the content of which was
reported by the local press and warning that the extension of
840 meters north of the runway at El Prat Airport
the future of port activity. In the letter
Salvador criticized Sánchez Llibre for advocating
despite the fact that he had been informed several times
of the potential serious effects of prolonging the
may make it impossible for the container to operate
terminal at Muelle Prat and the future relocation of the second
container terminal to the future Muelle Catalunya, terminals that have
need taller cranes, raising them from 80 to 90 meters, which
they would be impossible to place because they would interfere
with the air cone of the airport.
"I find it sad," Salvadó wrote, "that Foment del
Treball, an entity with which the port has historically
maintained close relations, propose an extension of 840 metres
northwards, despite being repeatedly informed by the port
of these serious effects'.
