    Malgré la forte régression des trafics de diverses conventionnelles et de vracs secs, le port d'Anvers a connu le deuxième meilleur exercice de son histoire en termes de volume, avec un transbordement de 115 millions de tonnes en 1999. Le recul par rapport à l'année record qu'a été 1998, est resté limité à 4,5 mio. de t, soit 4%.
  • Le recul du transbordement de minerais entraîne une baisse de 3,5% du trafic de Rotterdam
    Le nouveau bourgmestre de Rotterdam, Ivo Opstelten, s'est montré plus ou moins satisfait des résultats annuels du port à la veille de leur présentation officielle: "Le tonnage a légèrement diminué de 3,5 pour cent, mais l'avenir s'annonce bien". Rotterdam peut présenter, tout comme Anvers, le second meilleur exercice de son histoire. Il s'agit cette année, selon l'Entreprise portuaire de Rotterdam (GHR), de 303,9 mio. de t, contre 314,7 mio. de t en 1998. La ville mosane affiche quelques similitudes avec Anvers pour ce qui est des secteurs en recul: à Rotterdam aussi, les principales chutes concernnt la manutention de vracs secs, plus particulièrement de minerais et de charbon.
  • China Shipping développe son service nord-européen
    Jamais armement n'aura connu une évolution aussi rapide que l'entreprise chinoise connue sous le nom de China Shipping Group. L'armement assure actuellement deux services containérisés hebdomadaires entre l'Europe et l'Asie. L'un est opéré à l'échelle de huit porte-containers de 3.000 à 3.500 TEU et concerne notamment le port d'Anvers. L'autre est exploité au départ de la Méditerranée avec une flotte de huit PC de l'ordre de 2.000 TEU. Ces services ont été lancés en 1999 à quelques mois d'intervalle et connurent entre-temps de sérieuses adaptations en ce qui concerne la taille des navires alignés. Depuis, les initiatives se sont multipliées et d'autres sont en passe d'intervenir.
