Assiterminal presents its proposals to ensure competitiveness and sustainability to the Italian port system
Central issues are those of work, governance, energy transition and digital transition
Genova
December 9, 2024
In view of a 2025 that promises to be difficult for ports Assiterminal presented today in Genoa, on the occasion of the Christmas toast of the association, its own position paper, which has already been shared with the government, with which the Italian Association of Port & Terminal Operators illustrated the its proposals to ensure competitiveness and sustainability to the Italian port system. A system that, according to the association will be put to the test next year as - explained Assiterminal - "the geopolitical and economic data, even according to analysts, do not provide us with data on freight transport in Italian ports for 2025. We therefore imagine - specified the association - a trend similar to that of this year for the entire freight sector, which remember it differs very little from 2023, especially if we keep the increase in transhipment volumes compared to the ports/gateway terminals. Similar uncertainty - he specified The Association - towards food bulk, except perhaps those liquid, while automotive and ro-ro offer food for optimism and therefore constant growth rates. The sector is also waiting of miscellaneous goods/general cargo which in any case counts on consolidating the market shares acquired. The only sector of which we are aware of significant growth - noted Assiterminal - remains the cruise ship that should give new passenger records lively".

"There is a lot of talk about ports, little about terminals, of the port companies that make it live, that generate traffic and work," observed the president of Assiterminal, Tomaso Cognolato, on the occasion of the presentation of the position paper of the association, which we publish below. "The system - he underlined - needs governance and shared actions, no longer postponed. Our proposals represent a plan for modernising Italian ports and making them more sustainable, and aligned with international standards. 'Re also working assiduously with the confederal system to outline a series of proposals in this direction".

Assiterminal's position paper addresses four themes those of work, governance, transition energy and digital transition. Compared to the first, the document underlines that the national collective agreement of work, which has been recently renovated ( of 19 November 2024), is a model of balancing needs and workers' rights, introducing tools for welfare and improving health and social security conditions. For governance of the Italian port system, Assiterminal believes that a centralised approach is needed to enhance the value of investments and ensure efficiency that is competitive at the international. On the energy transition front, The association asks for the incentive of the self-production of renewable energy, dock electrification and adoption of alternative fuels through rewarding instruments in the concessions, but also investments in storage and in alternative fuel supply processes. For the digital transition, according to Assiterminal the goal is that of standardizing the collection and management of data between companies, institutions and terminals to promote greater transparency and allow more efficient investment planning.

3.1) PROPOSTE
