    Les actionnaires du manutentionnaire rotterdamois de containers Europe Combined Terminals (ECT) ont confirmé que Hutchison Port Holding Ltd. (HPH), une division du groupe Hutchison Whampoa, a été invité à formuler une offre sur ECT. Koninklijke Nedlloyd, Internatio-Müller et Pakhoed (qui détiennent chacun 30,56% du manutentionnaire) et NS (8,32%) se sont contentés de déclarer que cette offre devrait permettre d'aboutir à "la structure désirée" pour ECT.

    "Au cours des 12 derniers mois, nous avons transporté plus d'un demi million de véhicules, dont des camions et des équipements lourds, 36.000 TEU et 50.000 t de diverses entre l'Europe et la Méditerranée. Sur le plan des activités terminales, nous enregistrons à notre terminal automobile de Salerne une forte croissance qui se traduira cette année par un trafic de quelque 250.000 voitures neuves et plusieurs milliers de trailers et de containers. L'Euro Terminal de Palerme traitera cette année 100.000 voitures en provenance de et vers la Sicile. Notre objectif pour 1999 et 2000 est d'investir dans des terminaux dédiés et des sociétés logistiques affiliées dans les ports concernés, ce qui est d'une importance capitale pour le service Euro-Med. Ce service reliera également les régions de la mer Noire afin d'inclure les dessertes de pays comme la Russie, la Roumanie, la Bulgarie et la Géorgie. Enfin, ledit service reliera également la Baltique ou des pays comme la Pologne, les Etats baltes et la Finlande, de par leur croissance économique, offrent des opportunités de trafic". C'est ce qu'a déclaré l'armateur Emanuele Grimaldi à Killarney en Irlande où le groupe donnait sa deuxième conférence "Euro-Med".

Les autres constructeurs de camions sont eux aussi très durement touchés. De sorte qu'on peut se demander si l'on ne va pas assister, à l'instar de ce qui s'est passé au début des années 1980 aux Etats-Unis, à une offensive européenne au Japon. Certains observateurs disent que les mauvais résultats de Nissan Diesel risquent de compromettre une prise de participation de Daimler-Benz dans le constructeur nippon. Nous sommes persuadés du contraire. L'opportunité est trop belle pour se nicher sur un marché demeuré fermé depuis des décennies.
