The European Commission has approved the acquisition of joint control of German Tognum AG and the Norwegian Bergen by Germany's Daimler AG and Britain's Rolls-Royce ( of 9 March 2011). Brussels has said that examination of the concentration showed that the overlap of activities covers only Tognum and Bergen, and in particular the activities related to the production and sale of diesel engines to alternative applications in the maritime sector (ship propulsion and auxiliary engines) and generators running on gas and diesel. The Commission has therefore announced that it has found that increased market share of the shares determined by the concentration will be moderated and that the new merged entity will continue to be confronted with numerous, strong, effective competitors, including Caterpillar, GE and MAN.
