The Ethiopian government has acquired 19% of the society that manages the Berber port of (Somaliland)



The Ethiopian government has acquired 19% of the capital of DP World Berber Port, the society controlled from the terminalista group DP World of Dubay that in 2016 has obtained the multipurpose management of the port of Berber, in the Republic of the Somaliland, within a contract of concession of the duration 30-year-old with automatic extension of ulterior ten years(on 6 September 2016).

DP World Berber Port is constituted as joint venture between the group of Dubay and the government of the Somaliland, with share quotas pairs respective to 65% and 35%. As a result of the agreement which signed from the government of Ethiopia with DP World and the Somaliland Port Authority, the capital stock of DP World Berber Port turns out subdivided in quotas pairs respective to 19%, 51% and 30% now.

The understanding previews moreover that the government of Addis Abeba invests in the infrastructural development of the Corridor of Berber, project for the realization of a street infrastructure of 241 kilometers that connects Berber with Wajale, center place on the border between Somaliland and Ethiopia, artery that will continue in order to reach Addis Abeba for a development total of 937 kilometers. Moreover there is under consideration the construction of an ulterior dock in the port of Berber, let alone the purchase of other harbour means in order to increase to the efficiency and the productivity of the port of call African, with a first crane that will arrive in port within this year.

"The agreement - the minister of the transports of Ethiopia has explained, Ahmed Shide - will help Ethiopia to make sure an ulterior logistic gateway for its increasing traffic of import and exports generated from the increase of the population and the economy. Moreover the participation of Ethiopia to the development of the port of Berber and the Corridor of Berber will contribute to the economic development and to bring new opportunity to the population of the Somaliland". The minister however has specified that Ethiopia will continue also to develop the corridor of Djibouti, to increase uses it of the current harbour ports of call to Djibouti and to examine other opportunities in order to develop to other logistic ports and corridors in the region.

We remember that the DP World group work also in the port of Djibouti through the Doraleh Contaner Terminal, joint venture constituted in the 2006 with the government of the State African, government who past friday the group of Dubay has accused to have illegally assumed the control of the terminalista society(on 23 February 2018).
