PORTLAND -- The International Safety Management (ISM) Code becomes mandatory on July 1, 1998. The Code will apply to all tankers, bulk carriers, gas carriers, passenger ships and cargo high-speed craft of 500gt and above. It will be extended to other ships in 2002.
