  • John Koskinen, chairman of the President's Council on Year 2000 Conversion, not only gave a thumbs-up for the country's preparedness but also found some positive aspects of the Y2K challenge - mainly bringing technology into the forefront of business planning. "Y2K is teaching us that top management needs to be more involved in information technology on an ongoing basis since information technology cuts to the very heart of how organizations conduct their business," he said.
  • The National Mining Association, which represents coal mining companies, promised not to lobby in support of competition-enhancing provisions sought by most of the nation's coal-burning electric utilities, the coal industry's most important customers. Those utilities wish to tie legislative language diluting rail market power to congressional reauthorization of the Surface Transportation Board.
  • DHL International executives are playing down the impact, but the $5.5 billion IPO by United Parcel Service in November must have been a real eye-opener for the smallest of the four integrators. The company announced that it plans to sell up to 23 percent of the company through its own IPO within three years. The opportunity arose after Japan Airlines announced Dec. 10 that it had sold a 20 percent stake in DHL for $100 million, retaining just 6 percent of the company.
  • Savvy shippers and their carrier partners, realizing that larger trucks may be years away in the current political reality, increasingly are discussing other ways to generate productivity improvements. According to the Truckload Carriers Association, the No. 1 issue is improving productivity at the shipping-receiving docks. Donald Schneider, president of Schneider National, says that requires only common sense and planning. Schneider offers three solutions for more efficiency at the docks: No-touch freight, more accurate measurements of driver time at the dock, and more drop-and-hook programs.
  • As they struggle to find a way out of equipment repositioning problems, ocean carriers may discover escape routes through their own back yards, according to P&O Nedlloyd. Arjen Uytendaal, the steamship company's director of international container management, told delegates at a London trade conference that P&O Containers and Nedlloyd Lines have been sharing container inventories for years. The tactic saves money but the prospect of losing control of assets has kept these types of partnerships from being more widespread, he said.
  • Chemical shippers continue to see poor service from Norfolk Southern and CSX despite improvements in the operating data reported by the railroads. Some comparisons can be made to chemical shippers' woes during the Union Pacific Railroad service crisis in the West two years ago, but so far the term "meltdown" has yet to be used to describe the problems in the East. Chemical customers are hopeful that an open forum meeting in Philadelphia Jan. 11 will be an impetus to better service.
  • AEI and Danzas may have set the ball in motion but consolidation is far from over in the freight forwarding industry. Skeptics and proponents alike agree that freight forwarding is following the path of other transportation sectors where mega-companies will be formed, dwarfing most competitors. Who the beneficiary is of such mergers remains to be seen. Is it the stockholder? The employees? The shipper? Time will tell.
  • Less-than-truckload motor carrier Roadway Express has reorganized its information technology department in preparation for an electronic-commerce tsunami in the following years. Much of the restructuring involves personnel. Bob Obee, vice president and chief information officer, says he hopes the results will be to make internal information more accessible to customers. The company outlines several ways it plans to do this, including offering direct consumer home deliveries.
