Irregularities, corruption, pilferage to blame, JS panel told

Mongla, the country's second seaport, is on the verge of shutdown. Though the government has taken various steps to repair the tarnished image of the seaport, they do not seem to have yielded fruit.
The first meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Shipping Ministry with its chairman Golam Mohammad Siraj in the chair yesterday was told that due to irregularities, corruption, pilferage and mismanagement by the port authorities, Mongla is being shunned by foreign port users
