Rio Tinto yesterday confirmed the boom in demand for Pilbara iron ore but warned that its ability to exploit the situation fully was being hampered by congestion at Western Australia's northern export ports.
The group's June quarter production report, issued yesterday, showed that total production from the group's Hamersley subsidiary in the Pilbara surged by 11.2 per cent from 16.48 million tonnes in the June 2002 quarter to 18.34 million tonnes
