Lake Maracaibo management authority Comlago in Venezuela's Zulia state is developing a US$2.3bn port project to concentrate marine transport activities in the Lake Maracaibo area, according to information posted on Comlago's website.
Under the plan, a deepwater port with three terminals is to be built in three phases. The region is close to the Panama Canal and has direct access to the US and Europe. The area handles coal, petroleum, cement, grains, other dry loads, containers and tourism. Currently, 61Mt a year of cargo is shipped via Lake Maracaibo, according to Comlago
