Durban - SA Port Operations (Sapo) is pursuing long-term plans to ensure Durban's port is able to handle 5.5 million twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) units a year regardless of whether the facility is concessioned.
Themba Gwala, Sapo's general manager for the port, said yesterday: "It is important that we plan ahead", regardless of who provided for the infrastructure.
The plans, if implemented, would more than treble the port's capacity and should meet its container handling capacity requirements until about 2020
