The government of Athens has decided to remove the taxes on tickets of the ferries diminishing some the prices in order to above all support tourism in the next summery period. Yesterday the minister of the marine Activities, Yiannis Diamantidis, to the term of reunions with the shipowning associations of the field has said that "in this difficult economic moment he has decided himself to reduce the price of tickets of the ferries. I want to thank - it has added - the social parts that have shown understanding in these moments of difficulty for our nation, because our common objective is the sustainable development and the increase of our tourism".
The minister has explained that the reduction will be carried out with the cut of the taxes that currently constitute a third party of the price of tickets. The previewed reduction is of 30% of the price of tickets for the passengers and 37% for the motor vehicles.
Diamantidis has specified that, "in the interest of the citizens, the government will immediately proceed to the removal of all these taxes that come from the past, while the companies, from part they, this year are engaged not to take advantage of such reduction with possible increases of tickets so that all can travel towards our islands in more economic way regarding any other year".
From part its vice president of the Greek Shipowners Association for Passenger Ships (SEEN), Michalis Sakellis, has said that the shipowners are in agreement on the necessity to reduce the prices of the ferries through the measures announced from the minister. The representative of the shipowners however has manifested apprehension for the increase of the price of the fuel emphasizing that the shipowning societies cannot more tackle to an ulterior increase of the fuel. "Therefore - it has specified - on condition that the fuel remains to the current levels, the prices of tickets will be reduced proportionally".
Favorable to the price cutting also the Union of Marine Enterprises (EEN). "Draft of a very positive provision", president Apostolos Ventouris has explained emphasizing that the situation of emergency of the marine transport needs of fast measures in order to prevent to the disintegration of the transport coasting vessel.
