Yudhishthir D. Khatau is the new president of the international shipping of BIMCO (The Baltic and International Maritime Council). Khatau was elected last Tuesday in the general assembly of the BIMCO held in Vancouver and take over the German Robert Lorenz-Meyer.
Yudhishthir Khatau, who is vice president of the Indian shipping company Varun Shipping Company, is the first Indian President of BIMCO and, with its 43 years, the youngest in the 106 years of history of the association.
In his inaugural speech Khatau has brought attention to the energy sector, which - he stressed - is the key to many problems facing the shipping industry as one of the most important cost items and one of the main types of cargo transported shipowners.Noting that while alternative energy sources like nuclear, wind, solar and biofuels may seem attractive alternatives, the current technology does not allow the use for the foreseeable future and the shipping sector must therefore reliance on fossil fuels and tackle all the problems that arise.
In his speech at the end of the mandate of the outgoing president Meyer has strongly criticized the government for poor supply response to the problem of piracy.
The General Assembly also elected the BIMCO owner John Denholm Scottish appointed as chairman to succeed Khatau in two years.
