Second ceremony in a single day for the Italian group Fincantieri. If at the Marghera shipyard has been entrusted to the group's new Costa cruise ship Costa Fabulous( of 30 June 2011), in the establishment of the marine mechanics to Muggiano (La Spezia) were delivered to the Navy and the Kenya Umoja Nyayo units, classified as "fast-attack craft '(high-speed missile), which were entrusted to Fincantieri for the half-life refit and will leave for Africa on July 8.
Fincantieri has stressed that the contract was won in 2008 in a race that saw the participation of major competitors (British, Dutch, South Africans), marks the company's attention towards the African market, characterized by a significant increase in the demand for new units for the Marine and Coast Guard, in response to the need to ensure greater adherence to the territorial waters and to effectively counter terrorist activities to the detriment of maritime traffic, as well as piracy and illegal fishing.
The units were made Nyayo and Umoja at the shipyard British Vosper Thornycroft and their delivery dates back to 1988. The operations performed by Fincantieri, for both ships, involved the reconstruction of the hull (replacement of about one third of the structure for each vessel), propulsion (engine maintenance, gear and shaft lines), the remake of the propellers, the electrical and automation, the complete replacement of all equipment for command and control, the remaking of the air conditioning and most of the pipes, the total refurbishment and partial rebuilding of furniture, insulation and paving and maintenance operations of all auxiliary systems as well as installation of new equipment.
The two ships are 56.7 meters long, have a displacement of 450 tons, can reach a top speed of almost 40 knots, and accommodate a crew of about 45 people. When two ships are the only operational Navy and held Kenyan coastal patrol duties and combating smuggling and piracy.
