In the third quarter of the financial year 2010-11, corresponding to the second quarter of this year, the German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has posted an operating result (underlying EBITA) of 39.0 million euros on revenues of 1.4847 billion euros, down from 82, 8 and 8%, 9% compared to 226.2 million and 1,630 million euros in the third quarter of the previous financial year. The EBITDA (underlying EBITDA) amounted to 90.0 million euros (-68.9%).
The contraction of economic performance does not match a decrease in volumes transported by containerized fleet of the company instead in April-June period this year increased by 5% to 1.337 million TEUs compared to 1,279,000 TEUs in the second quarter of 2010. In addition, the average freight revenue per container TEUs remained virtually unchanged having amounted to $ 1,531 / TEU in the second quarter of 2011 compared to $ 1,536 / TEU in the second quarter of 2010.Hapag-Lloyd explained that the reduction of the total turnover was mainly due to the depreciation of 11 percent of the dollar against the euro.
In the first nine months of the financial year 2010-11 (the period October 2010 - June 2011) the German company revenues totaled 4,503,300,000 euros, an increase of 11, 3% compared to 4.0461 billion euros in the corresponding period of the financial year 2009-10. Operating profit was 161.8 million euros, down by 25.9% compared to 218.3 million euros in the previous financial year.
In the first nine months of the financial year 2010-11 the fleet of container ships of Hapag-Lloyd has moved 3,752,000 TEUs (+4.4%) and the freight in the period average was $ 1,576 TEUs (+9.1 %). Only in the period from January to June of 2011 the fleet carried 2,534,000 teu (+3.3%), of which 582,000 TEUs in the North Atlantic market (+1.5%), 559,000 TEUs in Latin America (+7, 0%), 549,000 TEUs in the Far East (-2.6%), 560,000 TEUs in the Pacific (+8.3%) and 284,000 TEUs in Australia / New Zealand (+2.9%).
Hapag-Lloyd is owned by the German group TUI with 38.4% of capital (to June), the proportion to 31 March was 49.8% and was reduced at the end of last May with the sale of ' 11.33% stake in the consortium formed by the city of Albert Ballin, Hamburg and Kühne Holding, Signal Iduna, HSH Nordbank, MM Warburg Bank and HanseMerkur. This reduction of the investment has resulted in a reduction of investment in TUI's Hapag-Lloyd from 2.067 billion to 1.537 billion dollars (of which 119 billion of equity capital and 0.35 billion of hybrid capital).
In the third quarter of the financial year 2010-11 cruise division of TUI, Hapag-Lloyd made by companies and TUI Cruises Kreuzfahrten (a joint venture with the American Royal Caribbean Cruises), reported underlying EBITA of 0.2 million revenues of EUR 48.8 million compared to an underlying EBITA of 2.2 million euros on revenues of 31.6 million euros in the corresponding period of the previous financial year. The underlying EBITDA was 2.4 million euros (-44.2%).
