The Calabria Region has announced that by the end of this year in the port of Gioia Tauro will open an office area of maritime health USMAF, equipping a laboratory for testing control of the goods arriving at the airport.
The offices of maritime health, air and border USMAF structures are directly responsible to the Ministry of Health and are located in major ports and airports.These offices carry out activities aimed at the control of incoming goods of health and community on the Italian territory (significantly non-animal derived foods and food contact materials, but also cosmetics, medical devices, drugs, manufactured in feathers), activities which result in clearance is exceeded health import controls, which can be either documentary, or analytical inspection, or - otherwise - the importation by non-admission rejection or destruction of goods.
The regional authority said that there is at Gioia Tauro maritime health office, a situation that does not penalize the very important infrastructure in Calabria, and that as an international port in Gioia Tauro, given the important flow of goods and transportation to and from all over the world, this office plays a role of considerable importance in the field of public health."We have always considered crucial - said President of the Region, Giuseppe Scopelliti - the strategic role played by the port of Gioia Tauro in Calabria, but also for the entire port system of the Mediterranean, since our settlement has taken steps to initiate and expedite all procedures necessary to ensure that the port will become more competitive. The establishment of offices USMAF represent a further opportunity to reduce time spent on non-food products of animal origin arriving in the port of Gioia Tauro, thus ensuring a faster start to the next destination. "
