Last Saturday in the port of Genoa was inaugurated the extension of the west side of the dock of the cruise terminal in Ponte dei Mille. With the work for which the Port Authority has invested 13 million euros, was made the reunification of the platforms 1 and 2 of the terminal building has a total berth length of 340 meters which will allow the docking of most modern ships.
The Port Authority of Genoa said that, if in 2007 the cruise ships of medium length (up to 250 meters) represented 70% of the world fleet, and covered 40% of total bed capacity while the large (over 250 meters) represented 30% of the fleet, and covered 60% of the total bed capacity, it is expected that in 2014 the ships below 250 meters will represent 60% of the fleet (30% bed capacity) while ships above 250 meters account for 40% of the fleet (70% bed capacity).
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Secretary of Transportation, Bartolomeo Giachino, the president of the Port Authority of Genoa, Luigi Merlo, the city's mayor, Marta Vincenzi, the President of the Province of Genoa, Alessandro Repetto, the Liguria Regional Councillor for the Budget Sergio Rossetti, the president of the Maritime Station, Ferdinando Lolli, and the CEO of MSC Crociere Pierfrancesco Vago.
