The Port of Livorno closed the first quarter of this year with a -17.2% percent drop in freight traffic



In the first three months of this year, Tuscan ports operated by the Port System Authority of the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea handled 8.18 million tons of cargo, with a decrease of -14.5% percent on the corresponding period of 2021.

The reduction was determined by the -17.2% percent drop in the eventful traffic from the Livorno port alone that amounted to 7.11 million tonnes, which also represents a -10.1% percent decline in the first quarter of 2020 when the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic had begun to have an impact on the activity of the labronic port climber and a -22.0% percent drop in the first quarter of 2019 when the health crisis was still far away. In the sector of miscellaneous goods, 6.03 million tonnes were handled (-4.3% in the first quarter of 2021, + 0.2% on the first quarter of 2020 and -6.6% in the first quarter of 2019), of which 3.51 million tonnes of rotatable (-7.2%, + 2.3% and -5.0%), 1.96 million tons of cargo in containers (-3.5%, -9.3% and -16.7%) totaled with an handling of containers equal to 182mila teu (+ 5.2%, -1.6% and -9.0%) and 560mila tonnes of conventional goods (+ 14.5%, + 31.4% and 38.5%).

Relatively to containerized traffic, the only import-export flow amounted to 151mila teu (+ 22.5%, + 16.5% and 5.2%) while that of transhipment was found to be 31mila teu (-37.2%, -43.6% and -44.8%).

In the first three months of 2022, the traffic of liquid bulk bulk in the port of Livorno was 929mila tonnes (-55.4%, -46.5% and -62.3%), including 10mila tonnes of crude oil (-98.9%, -98.6% and -99.1%), 536mila tonnes of petroleum products refined (-26.5%, -16.9% and -44.3%), 146mila tonnes of gaseous or compressed petroleum products and natural gas (+ 2.6%, + 5.8% and -4.0%), 145mila tonnes of chemical products (-17.3%, -1.9% and -16.6%) and 92mila tonnes of other liquid bulk bulk (+ 26.0%, + 8.4% and 9.1%). The port body specified that the large drop in liquid shipments was attributable in part to the company crisis of the ENI refinery and in part to the effects of the war in Ukraine. In the solid bulk segment the total was 157mila tonnes (-24.5%, -4.4% and -22.7%), of which 76mila tonnes of minerals and construction materials (-14.4%, + 70.9% and -10.2%), 28mila tonnes of chemical products (-39.7%, + 51.9% and 7.5%), 14mila tonnes of metallurgical products (+ 453.6%, + 4.7% and 68.3%) and 39mila tonnes of other dry bulk bulk (-44.5%, -55.7% and -53.7%).

In the first quarter of this year the passengers of the ferries in Livorno were 167mila (+ 63.5%, + 19.3% and -14.6%) and the cruerists slightly more than a thousand, traffic that was firm in the same period of 2021 and was a result equal to 18mila and 47mila crucierists in the corresponding periods of 2020 and 2019.

In the first three months of 2022 the port of Piombino handled 727mila tonnes of goods, with an increase of 7.9% over the same period last year, while the ports of the Elba Island handled 337mila tonnes of cargo (+ 12.7%). The passenger traffic volumes of the ferries were respectively 232mila people (+ 44.6%) and 233mla people (+ 44.4%).
