MET Development (MAIRE), Eni and Iren Ambiente have started
the authorization process for an innovative production plant of
methanol and hydrogen circulars at the industrial site in
Sannazzaro de' Burgondi (Pavia). The plant will be developed
by MAIRE together with Eni and Iren using the technology
proprietary NX CircularTM of Nextchem, a technology business unit of
MAIRE, which is completing the engineering activities
preparatory to the executive phase. This technology provides for the
conversion of specific types of waste by generating gas of
synthesis (syngas), subsequently used to produce fuels
and high-quality sustainable chemicals. Once
once built, in fact, the plant will be able to convert
in synthesis gas about 200,000 tons per year of non-toxic waste
recyclable waste that will be supplied by Iren Ambiente. Synthesis gas
will in turn be converted to produce up to 110,000
tonnes per year of circular methanol, which represents
An innovative alternative for the decarbonisation of the sector
maritime transport, and up to 1,500 tonnes per year of circular hydrogen,
that could be used in refinery processes, reducing
CO2 emissions compared to that generated by fossil fuels, or,
alternatively, it could be intended for mobility
sustainable transport in road and rail transport.
MAIRE has announced that, in addition, the plant will be able to
to recover 33,000 tonnes per year of inert granules,
for the cement industry, contributing to the
decarbonization of this sector as well. Circular methanol
- the company underlined - complies with the criteria provided
by the EU Renewable Energy Directive for Recycled Carbon
Fuels (RCF) and represents an effective and innovative solution for the
reduction of carbon emissions.
"This project - highlighted Fabio Fritelli, managing
director of Nextchem - represents a unique opportunity to
Combining environmental sustainability and further growth
and, in particular, Italian ports will be among the first to be
to be able to take advantage of the new ecological fuel required by the
international regulations. Nextchem's NX CircularTM technology
reduces your environmental impact with a solution that
supports and strengthens our customers' journey to
energy transition".
