
Last year the ports of Livorno, Piombino and the Island of Elba
administered by the Port System Authority of the Sea
Northern Tyrrhenian Sea handled 39.25 million tons
of goods, with a progression of +1.7% over 2023. In 2024, the
traffic in the port of Livorno alone amounted to
overall to 29.42 million tonnes, with a decrease of
-3.0% due to the sharp reduction of -25.3% in the volumes of
liquid bulk cargo decreased to 4.74 million tonnes as a result of the
closure of Eni's refinery, with crude oil volumes
which totalled 909 thousand tonnes (-59.4%), those of
refined petroleum products 2.54 million tons (-4.9%),
the traffic of gaseous products 438 thousand tons (0%), that of
chemicals 634 thousand tons (0%) and other liquid cargoes
218 thousand tons (-40.4%). Stable in the port of Livorno on
dry bulk traffic with 601 thousand tons (+0.5%), of which
368 thousand tons of minerals and building materials (+7.9%),
70 thousand tons of chemicals (-11.5%), 33 thousand tons of
cereals (-48.2%9, 22 thousand tons of metallurgical products
(-25.9%) and 98 thousand tons of other dry bulk (+35.5%). The
last year the port of Livorno also handled 24.07
million tonnes of miscellaneous goods (+3.0%), with increases in both
rolling stock amounted to 14.93 million tonnes (+2.5%), both
of containerized goods with 7.09 million tons (+2.6%)
Made with a container handling of 663,622 TEUs
(-0.9%), including 508,430 full TEUs (+2.9%) and 155,192 empty TEUs
(-11.6%), and conventional goods with 2.05 million
tons (+7.4%).
Also growing in Livorno was the traffic of
passengers who in 2024 recorded the transits of 3.31 million
people in the ferry segment (+8.1%) and a total of 864 thousand
passengers in the cruise segment (+36.1%), with a strong increase
of cruise passengers disembarking/embarking amounted to 54 thousand units
(+422.7%) as well as those in transit with 810 thousand units
(+29,8%).
Unlike Livorno, in 2024 the port of Piombino
benefited from the significant increase of +247.4% in bulk traffic
which amounted to 2.78 million tonnes,
volume that more than compensated for the declines recorded
in the other product sectors and which allowed the port of call
port to close the year with an overall increase of +34.0%
with a total of 6.86 million tons of goods handled.
In 2024, rolling stock traffic decreased by -6.1% to
3.08 million tons. Dry bulk cargo with
991 thousand tons (-3.9%), goods in containers with 330 tons
(-22.4%) and other miscellaneous goods with 781 tonnes (-71.1%), as well as
such as the traffic of new cars which was 499 thousand vehicles
(-9,4%). In addition, in Piombino the traffic of passengers of the
ferries remained stable with a total of 3.35 million ferries
transits, while cruise traffic fell by
-20.5% to 17 thousand passengers.
Cargo traffic in the island's ports is shrinking
of Elba which handled a total of 2.97 million
tons of rolling stock (-5.3%). On the other hand, there was a slight increase in the
ferry traffic with 3.18 million passengers (+1.1%),
while more pronounced growth was marked
from cruises with 24 thousand passengers (+10.3%).
